Lockdown

Like many artists during lockdown I have been reviewing sketchbooks and finding new ways of working. I wanted to make a contribution to the Covid effort, and offered to make drawings of frontline workers. Live sittings not being an option, I worked from j-pegs, re-arranging them and trying to imbue the portraits with my enthusiasm and admiration for these unsung heroes and heroines - our binmen, for example, never missed a week - and then gave them their framed portraits. At the same time I continued teaching permitted numbers out of doors, until that too had to stop. Now, delving into my past sketchbooks, I find many subjects that I never had time to develop before lockdown: Butterfly, a carving from drawings made in sunnier times, is one.
